I hope the cover, name and preview are enough to convince people to get this, because I really am not sure how to describe it. It’s like, extremely experimental hip-hoppy IDM with an occasional
(and very pretty) female vocalist, but that’s not even close to how it sounds like. I don’t really like using the term, but “avant-garde” is all that I can really think of. All I really know is
that they’re a group of people from Japan who’ve been active since 1999, going through some lineup changes and making some all-around quirky, fun, great music. It’s kind of poppy and mellow
sometimes, mostly on tracks like (R.I.P) Tide and Pinky, and at other times really chaotic and energetic, à la 2 More Heads_Sprouted! or Saddam Fed Bird While Jailed. It’s really crazy, try
it.

After six years in the making, film composer and founding member of the 80’s band , Vivabeat, Mick Muhlfriedel and experimental guitarist, G.E. Stinson to release album 6/16/10

Buff Roshi’s debut album « Devil You’re a Liar » marks the first release from the new Cephalophone Music label. The album, featuring cover art by celebrated L.A. guerrilla poster artist Robbie
Conal is the product of a long term studio collaboration between film and commercial composer and founding member of Peter Gabriel discovered 80’s band, Vivabeat, Mick Muhlfriedel and extended
technique guitarist G.E. Stinson, a charter member of the world jazz group Shadowfax. Stinson counts Buff Roshi amongst several current band projects he is part of, including Sleepr Wave, Coded
Source, plus numerous collaborations with Nels Cline.

« I began putting together bits of found sounds and random snippets of music that I had been collecting for sometime with some processed beats,” says Muhlfriedel. “I was a big fan of G.E.’s
Splinter Group and sent some of the tracks to him to experiment with. We then worked together on several additional songs. Eventually, I enlisted Renee Wilson, who added some vocals and later,
G.E. brought in the great John Fumo to lay down some trumpet.”

Of the eleven tracks on the album, Buff Roshi includes two covers, a lush chill-out reset of Pink Floyd’s « Set The Controls for the Heart of the Sun » and « Dark », a circa 1940’s Julie London
b-side featuring vocals by singer-filmmaker Renee Wilson, who appears as Raelette, Pat Lyle, in the Academy Award winning film, Ray.

In 2007 Muhlfriedel circulated a demo of several of the earliest Buff Roshi compositions, which garnered some late night airplay on L.A. hipster station KCRW and resulted in Hong Kong director,
Derek Chang tapping excerpts of two tracks for a Canon Camera commercial campaign. « Buff Roshi somehow manages to infuse layers of cinematic adrenaline with a cool jazz vibe that played well
against the visuals i was going for in the commercials, » said Chang.

El-Creepo! – El-Creepo!

From the demented mind of Todd Smith comes a catchy, twisted, and thoroughly entertaining record. For the uninitiated, Todd Smith was the frontman and head songwriter of now defunct Dog Fashion
Disco and it’s reincarnation, Polkadot Cadaver. Both bands known for their genre bending and catchy metal jams, Smith manages to take his unique ear for music and apply it in a whole new way.

Focusing mostly on a more mellow style, El-Creepo! takes what you expect and tosses it out the window. Smith, wanting to make a more acoustic centered record, wrote an odd but cohesive mix of
offbeat songs. Here you’ll find anything from a loungy country tune to 80’s synth pop to hammock-style mandolin fun. Every track offers something new and is a total treat to listen to. Do not be
mistaken, the songs are not weird for the sake of weird, but they are eccentric and still very listenable.

Smith handles a majority of the instrumentation, whether it be live guitar or bass, or digital instruments like synths and drums. Any live drums are taken by ex-DFD’s John Ensminger. Songs like
« Pitchfork » demonstrate his prowess around a kit, with perfectly placed accents and impressive fills. The production side off the album is also superb. Even with the variety of styles, you’ll
find everything sounds clean and in place.

Handling all of the singing, Smith’s voice ranges from deceptively sweet to deranged. Any kindness of the vocals is usually offset by the dark lyrics. Listening to the opening track, « Lazy
Tiger, » one might not readily guess that the easy-going mandolin groove is a song about being stalked by a killer. Or the unassuming acoustic strumming of « Spaceneedle » hides lyrics about the
morbidly beautiful side of doing heroin. A personal favorite is from the track « Witch Hunt » which describes the memoirs of a Jonestown massacre survivor. « What do they want from me/a deathbed
confession or a heartfelt apology/lets pass the Kool-Aid/strictnine and strawberry/it’s a Jonestown holiday/ all the kids are in their graves. » For the most part these lyrics are clever and well
written and not done so much for shock value as they are for a twisted sense of humor.

While, as I previously stated, the main focus of the album is a more mellow and acoustic style, El-Creepo! kicks it up a few notches when it has to. « The Art of Bullfighting » slowly builds to a
maniacal outro that could leave your head spinning. « Hitman, » which is apt to garner plenty of Mike Patton comparisons, is a face-paced hard rock jam. The synth pop groove of « Hot Little Temper »
is bound to have people dancing in their cars.

In closing, El-Creepo! is an extremely well collection of unique but entertaining songs. Some people may be put off by the subject matter of the lyrics, but others are going to find the songs
here surprisingly catchy and fun. Those who weren’t fans of DFD or PC can expect something totally different. It’s worth a listen to anyone as you are bound to find something you’ll like.

I’m maybe a wee bit late in highlighting this EP, as it was in fact released in February (before this blog even existed), but it’s one of my favourite listens of the year so it’s better late than
never. Kneel And You Will Lose is the second EP by Zefs Chasing Cara, a solo project that is inventive and complex in its inception, but a quite accessible piece of work.

The mainstay of the music is extremely tech guitar playing, but the complexity is not allowed to overtake the songs and instead fuels and caters for the progressive, rousing pieces. The make-up
of the tracks could be compared to house music, with the layering of sounds, building of momentum, and the general crescendo that is reached, and the structure allows for music that would
soundtrack many a great cinematic moment.

There Are two Timelines And In One I Would Regret Not Doing This and Hurtsz Kerb introduce the guitar stylings, some synth sounds and the dance dynamics, before the lo-fi mellow Bru Hit Him
splits the EP well and sets up an ending which blew me away.

It rises and drops several times, with the vocals having a calming effect in the middle, until it can’t be held back any more and the dam breaks allowing the wave of frenetic guitar to burst
through. It is really inspiring stuff and has such an impetus about it.

The final track Cracker Deelosay starts off with similar guitar stylings and more prominent vocals than previous tracks that are slightly unclear but have a definite rallying presence to them.
The song then bursts into what feels like a remix, with synth sounds and voice box taking over proceedings, giving it an almost house music feel. The step up tops off what feels like a massive
forward movement from the start of the EP.

This EP and its predecessor, I’m Gowing, are both available for free download.

It feels like a bit of a cheat to kick off a review by quoting someone else, but this particular quote is rather apt. David Harrington, the Kronos’ artistic director and founder, once said,
»I’ve always wanted the string quartet to be vital, and energetic, and alive, and cool, and not afraid to kick ass… But it has to be expressive of life. To tell the story with grace and humour
and depth ». With Floodplain, the Kronos Quartet has done all the above. Once again, they’ve pushed boundaries to produce a disc that stretches, excites and inspires the senses.

The album title refers to the fertile, flood-prone strips of land bordering rivers. The idea is that floodplains experience new life after the catastrophe of flooding, just as cultures that
undergo great difficulty will experience creative fertility. Certainly, the countries represented here, from the Middle East, South Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe, have all endured more than
their fair share of hardship, and the music frequently reflects this. Emotion is at its most raw; one senses anger, sorrow and wounds not yet healed, and this is certainly true for the disc’s two
newly commissioned works. The first of these, the edgy, unsettled Tashweesh, is by the Palestinian hip hop group, Ramallah Underground, who David Harrington discovered through myspaceIran. The
second, Serbian composer Aleksandra Vrebalovs  »…hold me, neighbor, in this storm…  », is a dignified, contemplative hymn that whips itself up into an angry, whirling climactic frenzy. There are
also traditional arrangements of works from Lebanon, Turkey and Iran, contemporary interpretations of classical music from Azerbaijan and India, and popular music from 1940s Egypt and 1970s Iraq.
The quartet are joined in a hauntingly beautiful performance of the Azerbaijani folkloric love song, Getme, Getme, by one of Azerbaijan’s most celebrated performers of the country’s
improvisational mugham singing, Alim Qasimov, and his ensemble.

Full marks to the Kronos Quartet for championing countries more known in the West for their instability than for their rich musical cultures. It’s the vibrant musical performances though,
saturated with humanity, pathos and soul, which give this disc its edge.

From Official Myspace :
